Could a virtual Volvo Open 70 sailing in real time, in real weather and in the same waters beat the circumnavigation of the island of Ireland 704 nautical mile (that’s approximately 1,304 kilometres) Round Ireland course record of

65 hours, 48 minutes and 47 seconds

set by Mike Slade’s ICAP Leopard 3 in Wicklow Sailing Club‘s Round Ireland Yacht Race 2008?

The inaugural Virtual Round Ireland Yacht Race 2009 was designed to answer that question. The race started on Saturday 06 June 2009 and resulted in more than one virtual Volvo 70 breaking the course record! First across the Finish Line was Paulos flying the Norwegian flag in a new (virtual) course record time of

60 Hours 23 Minutes 21 Seconds

beating Leopard 3‘s time by more than 5 hours 25 minutes!

If you’re interested in taking part in the next real Round Ireland to be held on the 19 June 2010 contact Wicklow Sailing Club. The club plans on making the 2010 Round Ireland the best yet so with luck the virtual sailors will set a new record and give the entrants in the next Round Ireland a real challenge to beat!

Just 27 boats finished the Virtual Round Ireland 2009 Yacht Race in the allotted time.

Winner’s Prize

The winner of the inaugural Virtual Round Ireland Yacht Race 2009 will win this unique prize, a T-shirt designed specially for the event and sponsored by one of our patently creative and generous participants.

Remember, as with the race, the prize is unique so make history, be the envy of your admiring friends – be the first winner of the Virtual Round Ireland Yacht Race 2009. The winning boat must be part of the Virtual Round Ireland 2009 group, must complete the Virtual Round Ireland (VRI) 2009 course and abide by all VRI 2009 Sailing Instructions.

Record Breaker’s Prize

In addition, the winner, if he or she breaks the current Round Ireland Yacht Race course record of 65 hours, 48 minutes and 47 seconds set by Mike Slade’s ICAP Leopard 3 in 2008, will receive a large photographic print featuring action from the real Volvo Ocean Race during the Galway Stopover at the end of Leg 7. The winning boat must be part of the Virtual Round Ireland 2009 group, must complete the Virtual Round Ireland (VRI) 2009 course and abide by all VRI 2009 Sailing Instructions.

Consolation Prize

The skipper of every boat in the Virtual Round Ireland 2009 group which completes the VRI 2009 course per VRI 2009 Sailing Instructions will be able to download a high resolution digital photographic image, again of action from the real Volvo Ocean Race, commemorating his/her entry in the challenge. (The course must be completed by the end of Leg 8 in the Volvo Ocean Race Game.)

SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

COURSE

Around the geographic island of Ireland, leaving all its islands showing in the VORG to port, i.e., an anti-clockwise course.

COURSE MAP

In the event of a discrepancy between the Course Map and the written word, the written word shall prevail.

STARTING POSITION

The Virtual Round Ireland Yacht Race 2009 will start from a position to the SE of Galway at 53°00′N, 09°45′W

(red buoy with Wicklow Sailing Club burgee) – same starting position as Leg 8 of the Volvo Ocean Race Game – Galway to Marstrand.

START TIME

The Virtual Round Ireland Yacht Race 2009 started at the same time as Leg 8 of the Volvo Ocean Race Game – Galway to Marstrand, i.e. 14:00 UTC/GMT, 15:00 hrs Local Time Galway or 16:00 CEST . To find your local time for the start of the Virtual Round Ireland/Leg 8 VORG, please click HERE. As per participation in the Volvo Ocean Race Game, you are reminded that boats which could not be connected at the time of departure, were launched automatically at the best angle for the first few hours of the race, until first connection. However, there was no guarantee that the boat would take the optimal route. It was in your own interest to take over the helm of your boat as soon as the race commenced or at the earliest possible opportunity thereafter.

FINISH LINE

The Finish Line shall be between the Starting Position (red buoy with Wicklow Sailing Club burgee) at 53°00′N, 09°45′W and a Starboard (green) buoy positioned at 53°00′N, 10°00′W approximately 9 nautical miles W of the Starting Position (on a bearing of 270 degrees magnetic from the Starting Position).

Each boat is requested to send a message to the Race Organizer (Sailpix Ireland) advising of its approach to the Finish Line no later than half an hour before estimated finish time. The message must be sent to the ‘Inbox‘ of Sailpix Ireland in the VORG to comply.

Finish Line shall be crossed from North to South.

RETIREMENT

A boat retiring from the Virtual Round Ireland Yacht Race 2009 shall notify the Race Organizer as soon as possible.

TRACKING

Boats will be tracked by the Race Organizer via the Volvo Ocean Race Game and via VRTool.

Just thought I’d add this page so that if you wish you can tell us a little bit more about yourselves or even just about your boat name. Email a photo, something you’ve written, a newspaper cutting, link to an online album or video, the possibilities are many. Tell us whether or not you sail in the real world or what you’re going to do once the Volvo Ocean Race Game is over. Be creative, be funny, be serious if you wish, be social, let us know what makes you who you are!

Braywanderer sent this: Hi, just adding to the ‘Who You Are’ section. I’m the Bowman in the link below. Braywanderer competed in the real Round Ireland in 2004. Big winds unfortunately damaged the boat near Tuskar Rock and boat and crew retired into Crosshaven, Cork.
